Independent's Night

Late last month Skyler and I posted a few lurid snapshots from the launch party for three new Titus Books. If you prefer text to illustrations, you can read my account of the launch and my readings of Jen Crawford's Bad Appendix, Jack Ross' EMO, and Bill Direen's Enclosures over at the Scoop Review of Books, a site which has been developing impressively since its own launch three months ago.

Thanks for your sage remarks on the launch and the books, O Maps - much appreciated (though I suspect Bronwyn may have had her tongue in her cheek when she claimed to have come dressed as an android) ...

You should maybe supplement, though, that this isn't Jen's "debut volume of poetry." The first, Admissions, came out through the Australian Five Islands Press New Poets series in 2000.

And a fine Scoop it is, speaking to the unconverted you reveal a different style, objective and yet persuasive. Good to know you can put on different hats without losing that special something. Thanks for covering the launch in the wider media, and for mentioning the light entertainment (with Andrew McCulley on keys) afterwards. Snowstorm forecast for today in the deep south! Cheers to you in the 'winterless north', Bill Direen.

i know a lot of writers are getting worried about the power that titus ruler brett cross has. is it right that one man has son much power over what is written and read? why should hie word be law? it's getting so writers can't go anywhere but titus, and brett cross knows it. writers come cap in hand and he makes them wait on his doorstep, then beg for the privilege of seeing their words in print. this isn't literature - it's textalitarianism. but what else can we expect when one man ruthlessly forces other publishers like soapbox and caxton out of business
using his contacts and his brute strength? i never thought we'd be living and trying to write under a literary dictatorship in nz...

"martin" - Titus is run tightly. Anyone submitting weak or soppy or "pretty" writing is advised to take self-protective measures - such stuff will not be tolerated by B.C. He is indeed in control of NZ Literature and so he should be.

Anycase - what do you think of the big truck protest? I wrote a poem about a truck once... I don't know why they disrupted everything but I loved it - as I wanted them to start a riot or a civil war or something - WHATEVER! - as I'm bored and a bit down lately...

congrats to maps for making the top fifty. but i see some so-called 'libertarian' site gets even more visits. It's a sorry time for words wanting to keep their dignity. Vive Titus Books and its rigorous standards (lifting of banners, shouts of Hurrah)!

hey man, put the stick down, suck up the atmosphere; there's nothing to be afraid of in a little carnivorous undergrowth.
